 COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS ON RACE

W.E. Widening Equity. Welcoming Everyone. Willard Elementary.

Who are W.E.? Our committee tries to make Willard a more inclusive community, one aware of its rich diversity, as well as its continued divisions and inequities. What do we do? Host both large events and small groups for adult education to bring our diverse families together for community building, conversation, and learning. Past events have included workshops on communication, racial awareness, and talking to kids about race. We’ve led small racial affinity groups on Zoom to offer adult peer support as well as opportunities to challenge one another and grow.

WHO IS THE WILLARD COMMUNITY? ALL OF US!
  • Nearly half of the teachers and students at Willard are people of color/BIPOC.
  • About 25% of our students come to Willard from Evanston’s core (due to redistricting after the closure of the Foster School in Evanston’s 5th Ward).
  • Also, many students from across Evanston come to Willard for its highly respected two-way immersion program (TWI). 25% of our students learn Spanish and English together!
Want to be involved?

We invite you to participate in our large events or small groups, or to join our planning committee to share your voice and ideas with our community. Look for current information and upcoming events on the Willard PTA website, the Willard Elementary School PTA group on Facebook, and in your weekly Owlnotes! Or email willardowlspta@gmail.com.
