Congratulations, Principal Battle!

Congratulations, Principal Battle!

Dear Willard Community -

With great joy as well as gratitude for your patience during this process, I’m excited to announce our intent to appoint Khloe Battle as the principal of Willard Elementary! Mrs. Battle’s commitment to authenticity, empathy, transparency, and an educational experience that honors every identity has fostered a true sense of community at Willard.

We recognize that the start of the new school year is fast approaching and we want to do everything possible to ensure strong leadership and stability for the Willard community. The School Board will officially vote on Mrs. Battle’s appointment at its meeting on Monday, August 5.

We are grateful for the staff and families who gave their feedback as part of our community survey and for those who served on the interview panel. Mrs. Battle emerged in the process by showing an unwavering commitment to being herself and fostering a school environment of love, empowerment, and growth. She has been a true champion for Willard students and educators, and has fostered a deep sense of community collaboration and trust. We are excited to see her lead in this role and provide continuity for our Willard staff, students, and families.

Mrs. Battle’s entire career has been spent at District 65, first as a teacher for eight years (see her in the classroom in this video!). As part of the District 65 Aspiring Leaders program, prior to becoming Assistant Principal, she worked with a D65 principal mentor to prepare for a school leadership role. In spring 2023 the Illinois State Board of Education recognized Mrs. Battle as a Teacher of the Year, both for her vibrant classroom culture and leadership in District 65’s equity initiatives.

Mrs. Battle earned her degree in elementary education; with support from Foundation 65, she earned her master’s in literacy education and reading specialist license, then later obtained an additional degree in educational leadership and administration. In her spare time, she loves listening to music, collecting sneakers, and watching basketball with her wife.

We will begin the search process for Willard’s assistant principal immediately, with the goal of naming a new assistant principal as soon as possible. Our district team looks forward to continuing to support Principal Battle and all Willard staff to ensure a strong and joyful start to the new school year.

Please stay tuned for a follow-up message from Principal Battle. Thank you for your continued support — we can’t wait to see you in August!
