Willard students explore Mesoamerican number systems
Math, art, social studies, and literacy skills all in one? Welcome to Anaisabel Lopez’s third grade class! Her Two-Way Immersion (TWI) students are studying Mesoamerican Indigenous groups, including the Mayan and Aztec civilizations.
Students counted the letters in their first name and identified the corresponding symbol in the Mayan numeral system. They then painted the symbols, which are shown on their lockers at Willard Elementary!
Students also worked together to write a summary of what they learned (see photo below). The goal of the TWI program is for students to develop strong literacy skills and language proficiency in both English and Spanish, in order for them to become bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural.
